Ace Combat 8 Named Aces: All 31 Spawn Triggers by Mission, and Which Skins They Unlock

Missions Last reviewed: Oct 2, 2026

Quick answer

ACE COMBAT 8 has 31 named enemy aces. They only show up on Veteran difficulty or higher, and each one needs a specific condition in its mission before it appears.[1][2]

Shooting one down unlocks a unique paint scheme for the type of plane that ace flies, which you can use in Campaign Mode.[1] The kill only counts if you finish the mission afterwards.[2]

As of October 2, 2026, the triggers are known for all 31. But for 4 of them (Missions 05, 15, 17 and 24), PowerPyx still shows "?" for the ace's name and plane, so we mark those as not confirmed.[1]

How to get a named ace: the steps in order

  1. Pick Veteran or higher. On lower difficulties the 31 named aces do not spawn.[1][2]
  2. Meet the mission's trigger. Each ace has its own condition (see the table below).[1]
  3. Shoot the ace down.
  4. Finish the mission. The kill only counts once you complete the mission after it.[2]

You do not have to do this during your first campaign. Nothing in the game is missable, and Assault Records can be finished in Free Mission after you clear the campaign once.[2]

On a score run, aces are worth chasing. PowerPyx's S-rank guide says each confirmed ace kill is worth about 2,000 points.[3] More on scoring: S rank requirements.

How we built this table: The ace names, aircraft and triggers come from PowerPyx's Assault Records list, checked cell by cell on October 2, 2026. The triggers are rewritten in our own words.[1] Where PowerPyx shows "?", we write "Not confirmed". We do not fill those gaps from reader comments under that guide. The "Trigger type" column is our own grouping. The skin column shows whether the community wiki's page for that aircraft lists a skin named after the ace, as of October 2, 2026.[4] "Not listed yet" means the wiki page has no such skin yet. It does not mean the skin does not exist, because PowerPyx says every one of these 31 aces unlocks a paint scheme.[1]

Our calculation: what the numbers add up to

  • 83 Assault Records = 52 + 31. PowerPyx says the first 52 records belong to special enemy units that appear automatically, and the other 31 are the named aces.[1] KeenGamer gives the same total: 83 enemy pilots, 31 of them named aces with special spawn conditions.[2]
  • 31 aces over 29 missions. Every numbered mission except Mission 14 has a named ace. Missions 23 and 25 have two each: 29 + 2 = 31.[1]
  • 27 of the 31 are named. 31 − 4 unconfirmed (Missions 05, 15, 17, 24) = 27.
  • 6 of those 27 have an ace-named skin on the wiki so far: Flamma, Orcus, Sicarius, Alienus, Prudens and Tegimen.[4]
  • Trigger types (our grouping): 7 timed, 7 "before an event", 6 "clear a group", 5 flying route, 3 specific kill, 2 protect, 1 mission event. 7 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 31.

The timed triggers are the ones to plan before you take off: Missions 02, 06, 10, 12, 23 (both aces) and 28. In those, a slow start can cost you the ace.

The 52 automatic records: special units by mission

These pilots appear on every difficulty and mostly need nothing special.[1] They count toward Assault Records but are not part of the 31 named aces.

Mission Unit Pilots Aircraft
03 Lux Lunae 160th Unit 4 MiG-29A Fulcrum
08 Lux Lunae 77th Unit 2 F-15E Strike Eagle
08 Lux Lunae 150th Unit 8 F-16C Fighting Falcon
08 Lux Lunae 180th Unit 2 Mirage 2000-5
11 Lux Lunae 55th Unit 4 MiG-31B Foxhound
18 Lux Lunae 140th Unit 2 Su-47 Berkut
20 Lux Lunae 100th Unit 6 F-14D Super Tomcat
20 Lux Lunae 99th Unit 4 F-22A Raptor
23 8th Pastoral Air Wing, 1st Fighter Squadron 2 Su-35S Flanker-E
25 Lux Lunae 33rd Unit 4 Typhoon
25 Lux Lunae 44th Unit 4 Su-33 Flanker-D
25 Lux Lunae 120th Unit 4 Gripen E
28 Lux Lunae 22nd Unit 5 Su-57 Felon
29 Selene, commander of the 1st Special Operations Wing 1 X-40 Nightmare

Our calculation: 4 + 12 + 4 + 2 + 10 + 2 + 12 + 5 + 1 = 52, which matches PowerPyx's count. Source for every row: PowerPyx.[1]

The one exception has a chain: the Lux Lunae 22nd Unit only appears in Mission 28 if you shot down Shadow 24 in Mission 18.[1] Destroying Shadow 24 in Mission 18 also spawns the named ace Curis in that same mission.[1] So one kill in Mission 18 feeds two Assault Records.

Shadow 22: where you meet him

People often search for how to beat Shadow 22. Here is what the sources confirm.

  • Who he is: Bandai Namco calls Shadow 22 the leader of the elite Sotoan Air Force "Shadows" unit. The story trailer showed him fighting Joker Flight.[5] The community wiki says "the Shadows" is what FCU forces call Lux Lunae.[6]
  • Callsign and plane: The wiki gives his callsign as Ares and his aircraft as the Su-57 Felon. It also says he leads Lux Lunae's 22nd Unit.[7]
  • Mission 18 (Moonlight and Shadows): PowerPyx lists the Lux Lunae 140th Unit as arriving automatically with Shadow 22 and Shadow 24.[1]
  • Mission 28 (A Thousand Points of Light): PowerPyx's Lux Lunae 22nd Unit entry is five Su-57s, and one of the tac names is Ares. That entry needs the Shadow 24 kill from Mission 18.[1]
  • His flying style: The wiki reports that Project Aces described a specific post-stall manoeuvre used by Shadow 22, named after the "Parthian shot".[8]

Not confirmed yet: we found no written, bylined guide with a Shadow 22-specific tactic, plane or special weapon. We also found none for his fight phases. General dogfight advice from PowerPyx's S-rank guide: save your flares for when several enemies have you locked. When you hear a steady lock tone, a High-G Turn usually breaks the lock, but it costs a lot of speed.[3] Plane picks: best planes.
